The fascinating journey of the coffee bean

From the source to your cup

It is small, inconspicuous and yet full of magic: the coffee bean. Millions of people start their day with it - in a café, at home or with their own coffee machine - but only a few know about its amazing journey. Because behind every sip of coffee is more than just caffeine: aroma, craftsmanship and passion come together in every cup.

It is a story of sun and earth, of patience and manual labor, of tradition and masterful roasting. Join us on a journey from the origin of the bean to the freshly ground coffee in your cup.

The origin: The plant behind the bean

What we call a "coffee bean" is not actually a bean at all.
It is the seed of a fruit - the coffee cherry.
This grows on the coffee plant in tropical regions around the equator. Particularly well-known are countries such as Ethiopia - the country of origin of coffee - Brazil, the world's largest producer, and Colombia with its highland plantations.
There are over 100 types of coffee worldwide. But two in particular are crucial for our everyday lives:

  • Coffea arabica - mild, aromatic, complex
  • Coffea canephora (Robusta) - strong, earthy, rich in caffeine

Arabica is considered to be of higher quality and accounts for around 60-70% of global production. Robusta, on the other hand, is more resistant and provides the popular crema in espresso.

Cultivation & harvest - patience you can taste

It takes three to four years for a coffee plant to bear fruit for the first time. When the cherries have ripened to a bright red, the harvest begins - in many places still by hand.

Only perfectly ripe fruits develop their full aroma potential. After the harvest, the processing determines the subsequent taste:

  • Natural (dry processing) - fruity, sweet, full-bodied
  • Washed (wet-processed) - clear, lively, fresh
  • Honey Process - balanced, slightly sweet

These steps have a decisive influence on the subsequent coffee blend and the aroma. For organic coffee with the organic label, sustainable cultivation is also mandatory.

Roasting: the moment of transformation

Green coffee is green, hard and hardly smells like anything we know. Only the heat brings it to life. At temperatures between 180 and 220 °C, hundreds of chemical reactions take place: Sugar caramelizes, aromas unfold, the bean "cracks" - it becomes bigger, darker, more aromatic.

Its profile changes depending on the degree of roasting:

  • Light roast - fruity, acidic
  • Medium roast - balanced, harmonious
  • Dark roast - strong, chocolaty, smoky

Whether you buy whole beans, grind them fresh or use them as ground coffee for the moka pot - the degree of roast determines whether your coffee tastes of berries, nuts or dark chocolate.

In your cup - more than just a drink

The roasted bean contains over 800 aromatic substances - more than wine. But the journey is not over yet.
The degree of grinding, water quality, temperature and brewing method determine the result. Whether it's a portafilter, filter, moka pot or coffee machine - every preparation tells its own story.
Coffee has long been more than just a stimulant. It is a morning ritual, a break in everyday life, a conversation starter and sometimes a little luxury in between. A café moment that reveals the finely selected aroma of a high-quality blend.

Responsibility - enjoyment with awareness

Modern coffee culture also means responsibility. Those who consciously choose organic coffee, coffee with an organic label and fair trade coffee blends not only support quality, but also the people behind every bean. Sustainable cultivation, fair payment and transparency in the supply chain are becoming increasingly important.
